My AT&T DSL account came with an IP address and default gateway on different subnets.

IP Address: 68.16.x.x
Default Gateway: 72.157.x.x

Why would the IP Address and the Default Gateway not be part of the same subnet? Any ideas?

I found a Zyxel 660HW DSL modem/router. Can it be installed on AT&T DSL? It seems to almost work.
The little Siemens modem is presently working ok, but it would be nice to have only one box.

There are other ways to do this as well. I know - I work for AT&T Internet Services.

No, we don't support Linux. No, we don't support ME or 98 (neither does the rest of the world). But if ME or 98 is working, we'll walk you through it. It's pretty easy.

As you noted, you can do it from where you are by accessing the modem or router. Older modems use the IP you noted of 192.168.0.1. Our newer ones (Motorola 2210, Westell F90, 2Wire router) use 192.168.1.254. You will use the ID of sbcyahooreg@sbcglobal.net and the password of sbcyahooreg. The newer modems are preprogrammed with the ID attreg@att.net and pw attreg already in them. These will connect as well.

Open a browser (IE, Opera, Safari 3.0) and surf to a bunch of sites but the easiest is
144.160.11.35/register
and it will walk you through the registration. At the point it asks you to install software, decline and you'll be ready to go. Log back into the modem, click on disconnect if it is NOT the 2wire, and correct the user ID and pw to the ones you just created. If you have a 2Wire, I suggest you unplug the phone cable for 2 minutes WHILE you correct the ID and pw, hit connect, THEN plug in the phone cord again.

Once you have a green INTERNET light, you're on and ready to go. But, you'll still have a green light even if you type the ID (but not the domain) or the pw incorrectly. It will bring you to a page to reset your pw but it wants to install software.

Good luck - it's pretty easy now.
