[...] We switched over to AT&T/SBC/Bell South/Cingular for DSL today after two years with the cable company. No big deal all together, but I’m glad I was able to find instructions to set up the DSL without using the CD that comes with tons of “customized” software, a Yahoo browser that’s merely a reskinned Internet Explorer, and the like. If you’re thinking about signing up for AT&T DSL at any point, check out the instructions I referenced about here. [...]

@John, I'm guessing just the software doesn't work on Windows ME, but I never used ME... To access https://sbcreg.sbcglobal.net you use the temporary username and password in step 2:

Use the following temporary username and password to get a connection: username: “sbcyahooreg@sbcglobal.net” password “sbcyahooreg”.

Sounds great. I 'll be trying it in the next week or so. ATT says Windows ME isn't supported. Is it they do not support it or it doesn't work with their DSL ? Also, in order to get to the https://sbcreg.sbcglobal.net site when you hookup to the internet, won't it ask you for your login ID and password before it works.

Thanks for the great manual! It helped me to avoid installing junk on my computer just to activate the service.

The only update is to access my modem configuration instead of http://192.168.0.1 I had to use http://192.168.1.254 how it was written on the back of the modem.

Thanks again!!!

P.S. To access both the modem configuration and https://sbcreg.sbcglobal.net I used browser Opera 9.23. No problem!

You recommend not using Firefox, but you don't say what browser (aside from that Microsoft thing) *will* work. I discovered that KDE's Konqueror works well enough with the sign-up page to complete the process, at least up to the point where it creates the AT&T/Yahoo user account. If your operating system doesn't have Konqueror installed, a Knoppix CD
